With three starters out already, Davenport’s Bulldogs dropped their district opener 64-28 on the road last Friday.
Going into this week’s homecoming clash with Olive on Thursday, the Bulldogs will be without a fourth starter as well.
Coach Grant Powell said kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. with homecoming festivities starting at 6:30 p.m.
“We have four starters, our quarterback has a broken finger and could face surgery,” Powell noted.
“The others are a broken collarbone, broken ankle and torn meniscus. With eight-man football it makes it tough,” Powell continued.
The coach said Cherokee is one of the best teams in the district.
The Bulldogs are 3-3 on the season, 0-1 in the district. “They jumped out to a 22-8 lead and then we came back and tied them at 22. Then, in a matter of about five minutes, they pulled ahead scoring 20 points,” Powell added.
Backup quarterback Ayden Stancell threw for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns.
Powell says, “Olive plays hard. They are scrappy and they play hard.”
Stancell was 17 completions of 28 attempts for 185 yards, three passing touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed the ball 13 times for 51 yards.
Brody Robinson carried the ball 18 times for 98 yards and one touchdown, caught nine passes and scored two more TDs.
Ivan Morris snagged four passes for 86 yards and a TD.
Devin Murfin had a total of 10 tackles, Robinson had nine tackles, and Tyler Gilkinson and Ayden Stancell each had eight tackles.
