In what Davenport Coach Grant Powell described as one of the most physical football games he’s seen played in a long, long time, his Bulldogs fell to Waukomis 24-20 in a road contest last Thursday night.
“It was a close, close game,” Powell noted, in reiterating how physical it was.
“We scored first and were ahead 14-8 at halftime. Then after halftime we moved ahead 20-8. But we had some things that didn’t go our way from then on,” he added.
“We played hard, physical and good enough to win.
“We just didn’t catch some breaks we needed,” Powell continued.
Halfback Brody Robinson led the rushing attack for the Bulldogs carrying the ball 17 times for 192 yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Chase Mitchell, who normally quarterbacks the team but has been out with an injury, had 11 total tackles, nine of which were solo, and Robinson had a total of 10 tackles nine of which were unassisted.
Powell said Mitchell led the team on defense and he also played tight end.
Quarterback Aydan Stancell completed one pass out of seven attempts but rushed the ball 23 times for 99 yards.
On defense, Stancell had seven tackles, six which were solo.
Devin Murfin also had seven tackles, five which were solo.
The Bulldogs are 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the district.
Powell says next up is Covington-Douglas Friday night and the Bulldogs are at home. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
Powell says a win Friday night secures a playoff spot.
About Friday night’s opponent, Powell says, “They’re not too bad. They’ve gone through the meat of their schedule. Their quarterback is good and he makes them go,” the coach thinks.
