Chandler Wrestling had a special guest on Saturday hosting 57 wrestlers from Chandler, Cushing, and Stroud in the Jerry Best Wrestling Clinic.
Best is a Chandler High School Alumni from the Class of 1991. He is the only 4-time undefeated State Champion for Chandler High School, winning in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 under former Chandler High School Head Coach Danny Harris.
Harris was in attendance along with his grandson, Fysher, who was attending the clinic.
Best went on to attend University of Central Oklahoma and became a 3-time NCAA II National Champion, as well as graduate assistant coach. He went on to become the head high school wrestling coach in Allen, Texas.
His record is remarkable, with 13 consecutive boys team state championships.
He has two consecutive girls team state championships.
He has coached 198 state qualifiers, 152 high school state placers in Oklahoma and Texas. 58 of those wrestlers were state champions with 9 wrestlers earning Most Outstanding Wrestler at the State Championship.
Best has also coached nine state dual team championships with a record of 319-77.
His coaching honors include: Regional Coach of the Year for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2020; Texas State High School Coach of the Year for 2009 and 2011; NWCA Texas Coach of the Year and Region 6 National Coach of the Year for 2013; NFHS Texas Coach of the Year and NFHS Section 6 National Coach of the Year for 2014.
Best has also coached 126 age group USA All-Americans or National Champions in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco. This includes 3 Cadet World Freestyle members, 1 Junior World Freestyle member, 1 University World Freestyle member, and 2 Cadet Women’s World Team member. In the last few years, he has led 233 wrestlers to state placing finishes with 100 TX State Champs, 67 National Champions, 6 Trinity Award Winners, 5 World of Wrestling Wrestlers of the Year and 5 Triple Crown Winners.
