Redskins earn district honors

McLoud coach Rusty Hall was named the District 3A-1 Coach of the Year and seven Redskins were named to the all-district team this week. A McLoud graduate, Hall took over as the Redskins head coach in 2015 and has taken them to the playoffs twice, including this season.

Bulldogs fall at Laverne

Davenport’s remarkable season came to end Saturday evening in Laverne, as the Bulldogs fell 52-12 in the state quarterfinals. Davenport finished with a 10-2 record, including an eight-game winning streak. Laverne advances to the state semi-finals at Pioneer-Pleasant Vale.

Hoops season starts

As befits the year 2020, the high school basketball season opened last week with some unusual scenarios. Chandler had to scrap its scheduled opener against Okemah due to COVID-19 quarantines, and McLoud played its boys opener against Meeker in a quiet gym without spectators or cheerleaders.

Carson Funk accounted for all six Davenport touchdowns in the 40-20 rout of then-undefeated Summit Christian Academy last Friday. On Davenport’s first possession, Jeff Greenfield and staff dialed up a Funk run that went for 46 yards, basically untouched.

Chandler and Davenport wound up on opposite ends of the state Friday night. The Lions trekked to Marlow, where they lost to the host Outlaws, 31- 28, in the third round of the playoffs. Davenport went on the road, as well, thumping previously unbeaten Summit Christian, 40-20, in Broken Arrow.

Marlow staves off Chandler, 31-28

Marlow scored twice in the third quarter and held Chandler on a crucial fourth down with three minutes left in the game, emerging with a 31-28 win Friday night. With the win, Marlow advanced to the state quarterfinals against defending state champion Metro Christian.
