Happenings at Prairie Pointe

Only in Oklahoma could we go from sub-zero to balmy temperatures in a week’s time. It’s like the Mark Twain quote “If you don’t like the weather now, just wait a few minutes.” It was certainly hard on the cows and new born calves. The only ranchers I know who didn’t lose at least one cow and/or calf are Steven and Beth (Hill) Place. Beth tells me they check their herd every 2 hours, all day and all night, and when a new baby is found, it’s brought inside. Falling through the ice and drowning is another peril non-cattle people don’t think about, but it happens.

Seems like our winters were colder 60 years ago. My dad kept an ax by the back door and if there was a chance of ice on the pond, someone had better get to chopping.

Hand and Foot Club will resume its monthly card night this Thursday evening at Prairie Pointe. It’s always fun to hear the ladies laughing and having such a good time. It’s been over a year since they met.

Joe Navrath and his Sugar Time Band performed last Friday evening at Prairie Pointe. They were thoroughly enjoyed and helped us mark another step toward normalcy.

Stroud legend and current Texan, Bret Graham will be in concert Wednesday, March 24. Wear your mask and come on out.

“PARKER IS BACK!” reads the sign on the building. Inquiring minds had to know so one phone call later I learned due to COVID precautions, Parker has not been in the shop since last October.

On April 1, Parker will celebrate 41 years of business in the Stroud community drawing regular customers from all over the country. In this same phone call, I learned Sondra took a fall Sunday morning which required stitches at the Stroud Hospital. Sondra gave kudos to physicians Alex Garcia and Kelly Schock for their excellent emergency room care. We are so blessed to have a local hospital!

Bro. David Lennox and Paul Schiller came from Milfay Baptist Church to lead our church services February 28. Paul led in singing some of our favorite old gospel songs. Bro. Lennox read Psalms 23.

He emphasized from it that with His rod and staff He protects and guides us through life as we listen to His voice and follow. Last Sunday, Rev. Gerard, Carla Hale and Jo Braden came from United Methodist Church for praise and worship services. Carla played piano and led us in song. Rev. Gerard was very happy to be back with us.

He read John 2:13-16. He explained that just as the temple was not being used for the purpose God intended, many of us do not pursue the purpose God has for our lives. Keeping the commandments to love God and love our neighbors should be our primary focus.

Recent out of state visitors to Prairie Pointe include Mark and Miana Lytle of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; Melody and Pat Magness of Rockwall, TX; and Kay Terronez from Kentucky. Melody brought cherry pies and cheesecakes which we are still enjoying. These “kids” are the children of residents Marion Lytle, James Green and Ruth Terronez.

March birthdays include Glenda Owens Rains and Tillie Absher. Between them, they have 191 years of good times, hard times, happy times and sad. Happy Birthday Ladies….. and many more! Wednesday, March 10 is also the birthday of former Stroud resident Irene Sykora. Who remembers the yardsticks Sykora’s Furniture used to give away? I have one. It is inscribed “Not for use on husbands, kids or dogs.”
