The Meeker Town Board Monday night voted to waive the prohibition against consumption of intoxicating liquor in public for its July 3 celebration at Meeker Lake.

Board members held a brief, special meeting to address the issue.

Town Administrator Dickie Walton advised the board members the Meeker Chamber of Commerce had a wine vendor come in wanting to sell wine by the cup and the bottle.

“This is for a designated area only,” Walton told them. “Those consuming the wine must stay in the designated area. They won’t just be walking around,” he assured them.

In response to an inquiry by a board member about the waiver being for each July 3 from now on, Mayor Aaron Head replied, “It’s just for this July 3.”
