The former Assistant Chandler Police Chief has pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges and could face up to 20 years in prison on the two counts.

Steven Bradley Simon, 47, pleaded guilty last week to a multicount superseding indictment of illegal possession of firearm silencers, U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Downing announced.

Simon, who already had several state charges filed against him last September, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Jan. 21 of this year for alleged firearms violations.

He admitted the two counts as he appeared before U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton. Sentencing is to take place in approximately 90 days, the U.S. Attorney said.

He could also face fines of $250,000 on each of the two counts and terms of up to three years of supervised released.

Simon admitted he had failed to register the firearm silencers in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record and that the firearm silencers did not contain identifying information as required by federal law.

Simon still faces several charges filed against him in Lincoln County District Court last September.

He was initially arrested in early September and charged with four felonies and two misdemeanors stemming from a domestic disturbance and altercation with his wife.

In December, agents with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms reportedly arrested Simon.

The superseding indictment against Simon contained three counts. Count 1 was for possession of unregistered firearms. The charge accused Simon of possessing three different firearm silencers that had not been registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

Count 2 of the indictment charged Simon with possession of firearms without serial numbers. It accused him of possessing those silencers and that he knew they did not bear a serial number or other information required by federal code.

Possession of firearm after commitment to a mental institution, specifically Griffin Memorial Hospital in Norman on May 5, 1999 was alleged in Count 3 of the federal indictment. It accused Simon of possessing a Glock model 17, 9mm Luger caliber semi-automatic pistol which was in and affecting interstate commerce in that the firearm had previously crossed state lines to reach Oklahoma.

Allan Grubb, who is District Attorney for Lincoln and Pottawatomie Counties, filed the state charges against Simon last September.

The felonies filed in Lincoln County District Court against Simon in September include Domestic Assault and Battery by Strangulation; possession of firearm during commission of a felony; Plan/Attempt/Conspire to perform an Act of Violence; and unlawful use of a police radio.
