Davenport 48, Strother 0

Davenport’s Bulldogs earned their second shutout of the football season with a 48-0 victory over Strother on the Bulldogs’ home field last week.

The game ended following Davenport’s first drive of the second half. Head Coach John Greenfield said, “We received the second half kickoff and drove it downfield for a touchdown. That made it 48-0 and the Mercy Rule took effect,” he added, explaining the game ends when a team is ahead by 45 points or more in the second half wins.

Next up is Yale as they come to Davenport Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m., Greenfield said.

It will be Davenport’s final non-district contest before beginning district competition when they host Foyil the following week.

The Bulldogs rushed for 280 yards and passed for another 111 as they ran their season record to 4-0.

Sophomore quarterback Chance Accord threw for 111 yards while completing 5-9 attempts that included two touchdown passes. He also ran for 13 yards.

Running back Parker Mitchell led the Davenport ground attacked running for 132 yards on seven carries and three rushing TDs.

Cole Yancey ran for 90 yards, carrying the pigskin four times with one rushing TD.

Griffin Melson had 20 yards on two carries and he returned a punt 80 yards for a score.

Receiver Casey Harelson had three pass receptions, including one for a TD and Gage Keith caught a 49-yard TD pass.

The Bulldogs held Strother to 33 yards rushing and gave up only 49 yards through the air.

Greenfield noted that in contrast, a year ago the Bulldogs had to score twice in the final minutes to win.

He stated, “Last year, we were playing without our two linebackers and two running backs. And they graduated a few key players.”

The coach said his team “jumped right on the Yellowjackets. We returned a punt for a touchdown early. We pretty much did what we wanted.

“They had a hard time against us. They couldn’t run on us and they had a little success passing,” Greenfield said.

“We played pretty good defense,” he added.

“Our quarterback is coming along. Our offensive line blocks well and our backs are good about reading their blocks and they run hard,” he said.
