Titles for Davenport, Dale, Prague boys
It was the final tournament week of the regular season, and three local boys teams made it their own.
Unbeaten Davenport pulled out two overtime games to win the Pott County Invitational, Dale won a battle of No 1 vs. No. 2 against Cashion at the Wildcats’ tournament, and the No. 6 Prague Red Devils beat Okemah in overtime in the championship game of the 66 Conference tournament, played at Meeker.
Hayden Brooks and Joey Chrisman combined for 10 points in the overtime in the finals of the Pott County Invitational and the Davenport defense shut out Allen to give the Bulldogs the championship.
Brooks finished with 35 points, including 19 in the first half.
The win pushed Davenport to a 14-0 record and gave them three tournament championships for the season.
“We can be very good, if we want to,” said coach
Rick Wilson. “I want us to get better every game.” The Dale Pirates captured their third tournament championship of the season last weekend when they defeated Cashion 48-34 in the finals of the Cashion tournament.
Dale Coach Jeff Edmonson said, “It was a tough tournament, we played really good and I’m proud of these boys. Different kids stepped up every night. “Thursday night against Varnum we had five kids in double figures. Easton (Edmonson) went 4 for 4 from three-point range with 14 points on that night, Levi Kelly had four three-pointers and 18 points on Friday night against Clinton and Saturday evening freshman Jett Higson had eight points in the final quarter in the win against Cashion,” the coach said.
“All three, who are freshmen, stepped up and played really well in the tournament,” Edmonson added.
“Sophomores Deken Jones and Dayton Forysthe are solid every night on both ends of the floor,” the coach commented. “I give a lot of credit to those two sophomores. Our kids haven’t backed down all year,” Edmonson stressed.
The Pirates, who are 16-1 and rated No. 1 in Class 2A, were hosting Newcastle, 11th ranked in Class 4A, Tuesday night.
