Pedestrian fatality on Turner Turnpike

A pedestrian died early Wednesday morning after he was reportedly struck by a vehicle on the Turner Turnpike west of Stroud in Lincoln County.

State Trooper Spears identified the victim as Russell Mitchell, 49, of Glencoe.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Stroud Fire Department.

Mitchell suffered injuries to his head, trunk, arms and legs, Spears said. He was transported by the Medical Examiner’s Office to the ME’s office in Oklahoma City.

The trooper reported the colli sion occurred around 12:25 a.m. Wednesday in the westbound lane of the turnpike just west of mile marker 183.

Spears said Mitchell was struck in the westbound lanes and that further circumstances are under investigation.

He said the vehicle that struck Mitchell is under investigation and the report doesn’t list a driver or a specific vehicle. Cause of the collision also remains under investigation, the trooper said.

Spears stated it was drizzling at the time of the collision and the roadway was wet.

Spears, of the Turner Turn pike, was assisted by Trooper Michael Wallace of the Traffic Homicide Division and Trooper Grange of the John Kilpatrick Turnpike, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, Stroud Police and Fire Departments and the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
