April Lions of the Month announced

Chandler High School seniors Chynna Norton and Shayla Peery have been named April Lions of the Month by the Lion’s Club.

Chynna Norton, the daughter of Nan and Ervin Norton, holds a 4.0 grade point average while taking advanced classes in English for five years and a concurrent college class in Algebra at Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla.

Her efforts have earned her an invitation to the CHS Academic Banquet for four years and an Academic Letter. She achieved Academic Excellence in Child Development, Geometry, Advanced Placement English III and Chemistry. She participated in the CHS Gifted and Talented Program and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Chynna was selected to serve on the BancFirst Student Board of Directors and was invited to attend the Alpha Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Senior Night. She was the March Rotarian of the Month and the 2022 CHS Prom Queen.

Her leadership abilities were evident while serving as secretary for both her junior class and Student Council. She twice attended the leadership conference of the Oklahoma Association for Student Councils.

Chynna was a four-year member of Future Farmers of America and served as a manager for CHS Cheer, track and basketball. She was involved in Positive Peers, Postponing Sexual Involvement and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Her community involvement includes food drives, community events and raising money for Relay For Life. She showed care for military veterans by delivering Christmas cards and singing carols at the VA hospital, serving at meals honoring them and making posters for the Veterans Day Parade.

Among other occasions throughout the year, Chynna sought to bring joy to others by packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, adopting three children for Adopt a Child for Christmas, wrapping donated gifts for the Angel Tree project, and making Christmas cards for residents in the nursing home.

After graduation, Chynna plans to continue her education at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Shayla Peery is the daughter of Fred and Kristi Peery. She maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking three years of advanced classes in both English and Math. She took a year of concurrent classes at Rose State College. She earned an invitation to the CHS Academic Banquet for four years and is a member of National Honor Society.

A participant in the CHS Gifted and Talented Program, Shayla was a 2021 Oklahoma Girls State delegate and was selected to serve on the BancFirst Student Board of Directors. She received the State Superintendent Award for Arts Excellence.

Shayla has earned multiple awards while involved in choir including High School All-State Choir for two years and selection for the South Western Regional Honor Choir comprised of students from seven states. While participating in Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association contests, she earned superior ratings at the state level for two years as a vocal soloist and for one year in the ensemble contest.

Shayla is also an accomplished athlete qualifying for state competition in cross-country, track and girls powerlifting. She played basketball and served as a manager for football and basketball.

Other extracurricular activities include Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Positive Peers; Postponing Sexual Involvement; Drama; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; and Cheer.

She has been involved in the community through Relay for Life and Special Olympics. She helped clean the memorial garden at the Lincoln County Museum of Pioneer History and honored veterans by singing at Veterans Day events and the VA Hospital.

Shayla works at Chick-fil-A.

She has been accepted to study at The College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo., which has a 10 percent acceptance rate. She plans to major in vocal music performance working toward a career as a singer. She wants to be a positive influence to people through the world.
