Jury trials set for Stroud man in two cases

Jury trials have been scheduled for a Stroud man in two separate cases, one of which he is accused of assaulting two police officers.

Steven Eugene Laffoon, 52, of Stroud, was formally charged in Lincoln County District Court last Aug. 11 with two counts of battery/assault and battery on a police officer, and misdemeanors including disturbing the peace, public intoxication and resisting an officer.

The Stroud police chief and another officer were reportedly assaulted by Laffoon as they were attempting to arrest him while responding to a call.

Another felony count of driving while under the influence of alcohol and another intoxicating substance, second and subsequent offense, was formally filed Nov. 16 in Lincoln County District Court against Laffoon.

He also was charged at the same time with two misdemeanors of driving while license is revoked and possession of marijuana.

Supplemental information filed in that case shows Laffoon on Dec. 3, 2018 was also convicted in Lincoln County District Court of actual physical control of a motor vehicle while under the influence.

In the first case, accusing him of assaulting the two Stroud officers and three other misdemeanors, during his arraignment before District Judge Cindy Ashwood, Laffoon entered not guilty pleas and waived his right to a speedy trial.

Judge Ashwood set the cause for the May 17 felony disposition docket and a jury trial on June 6.

The first felony count accuses Laffoon of committing an assault and battery on Stroud Police Chief Clint Gaylord, striking Gaylord on the hand and body while he was performing his duties to arrest Laffoon for crimes committed in his presence.

In Count 2, Laffoon allegedly committed an assault and battery on Stroud Police Officer Charles Mash by kicking the officer in the leg while the officer was performing his duty to arrest Laffoon on crimes reportedly committed in his presence.

Both of those felonies are punishable by five years in prison and not more than one year in jail or a fine of not more than $500 or both.

The disturbing the peace count charges Laffoon with maliciously disturbing the peace and quiet of the neighborhood of 1026 Circle Drive in Stroud.

Count 4 accuses him of being drunk or intoxicated in the same neighborhood and in Count 5 he is charged with resisting an officer.

He reportedly resisted the arrest of Officer Mash and Chief Gaylord by fighting with the officers during the performance of their duties to arrest him for crimes committed in their presence.

In the second case, during his arraignment before Judge Ashwood, Laffoon entered not guilty pleas after acknowledging knowledge of the charges and his rights.

Judge Ashwood scheduled him for the same felony disposition docket and the jury trial was set on the same date.

In that case, Laffoon is accused of driving on Nov. 1 on Allied Road in the city of Stroud while under the combined influence of alcohol and marijuana or some other intoxicating substance.

Count 2, a misdemeanor, charges him with driving his car on the same date, road and in the same county while his license was revoked.

Count 3 accuses him of possession of marijuana while driving his car on Allied Road Nov. 1.
