Carney students’ activities

Students at Carney High School certainly kept busy during the fall semester by participating in offcampus learning opportunities in the larger area, regional and national communities.

Most of the activities took place on Fridays and Saturdays, supplementing the school district’s four-day instructional week, according to school staff.

“Ensuring that our students have an opportunity to grow their optics in a variety of ways is important to our school district and the Carney community,” said Superintendent Cyal Walden.

Students explored the Wichita Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma, attended a professional theatre production, and developed 18 small businesses that they presented to corporate professionals. They also learned about Oklahoma’s Tribal Nations at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City. Additionally, students visited Myriad Gardens, immersing themselves in the tropical rainforest.

Other activities included seeing Christmas lights at Automobile Alley in OKC, attending a musical cinematic experience, viewing a graffiti art exhibition, and visits by university athletes and the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity from Langston University. Students also developed many creative fundraising programs.

Carney High School students got a jumpstart on college visits, visiting Oklahoma City University, the University of Science and Arts, Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Southern Nazarene University, Oklahoma State University, Southwestern Christian University, Mid-America Christian University, Panhandle State University, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and the annual Iowa Tribe College Fair. The Carney College Wall is already filled with acceptance and scholarship letters for the Class of 2025.

School staff said all these activities would not be possible without the district’s many new corporate, business, family, and individual sponsors, as well as the “enthusiasm, encouragement, and energy of the students, staff, school board, families, and other Carney community members.”
