The Phillips 66 sign that sat behind OnCue for so long finally has a new home, the corner of Route 66 and Highway 99. When OnCue remodeled they took the sign down and decided not to put it up again. Every time I drove through Mc-Donald’s drive- through, which was way too often, I would see that sign and yearn for it for our community. I was afraid it would get damaged just lying around, especially when we could use it on Route 66.
So, as a Town Talk representative I contacted OnCue to see if they were willing to donate it and they were happy to do so. With GiGi’s Donuts now occupying that corner and the new sign going up, that intersection is taking on a fresh new look. It will be a positive first impression of our community. Thank you to Charles Palmer for helping clean up the corner by taking out the two unused pole signs and a big thank you to OnCue for the sign.
Town Talk says thank you to everyone who donated to the concrete pad for the pavilion at the Stroud Cemetery.
The concrete has been poured, and work has begun to get this project completed. Thank you, also, to Bob Pearman and the City of Stroud for your help with obtaining the shelter itself and acting quickly to get it started. With a new fence, grave markers, a soon-to-be grave location guide and ferns in the flowerpots, our cemetery is just another thing of which our community can be proud.
The Stroud High School Tigers football team ended their season with a stunning victory over the Luther Lions with a score of 63-8 making their regular season record nine wins and one loss. Those Chandler Lons better be glad we weren’t warmed up yet. Stroud won their District with a 7-0 record and will take on the Beggs Demons this Friday night at Jack Poskey Stadium here in Stroud with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Don your blue attire, turn on your Tiger Blue light bulb, grab your cowbell and head to the field Friday night to support our team. It’s a great time to be a Tiger.
Speaking of the Stroud Tigers, one of our own, Trystan Baker, was recently honored with an article about his “on and off” the field’s accomplishments. The article was printed in the September issue of the VYPE Sports Magazine. The magazine provides in-depth coverage of high school sports and is distributed throughout nine states. Congratulations to Trystan for this recognition.
One of Stroud’s own, Paul Mercer, Stroud graduate and resident, was honored at the OKC Thunder game Tuesday night during their halftime veteran’s ceremony. The Thunder honored two hundred and fifty veterans and active/reserve military heroes who are based in Oklahoma.
As a thank-you for their service these men and women received two free tickets to the game and special recognition by the Thunder.
Congratulations to Paul on receiving this honor and Town Talk thanks him for his service.
Town Talk has begun buying scarecrows with the donations we received from you. I told you I’d let you know how many we were able to purchase but we do not have a total number yet. Even though Thanksgiving hasn’t even taken place, all the Christmas decorations are on full display at stores and scarecrows have been hard to find. We have bought about twenty so far but are still on the hunt. Thanks again to each of you who helped by donating to this project.
I recently reconnected with a former classmate from my elementary school days, Chuck Mc-Clendon, or as we called him, Chuckie. Chuck’s family left Stroud when he was in fifth grade. He let me know that his sister, Beth Lynn McClendon Brown, passed away on November 5th in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 78. As we were corresponding, he told me his other sister, who was two years older than he, Charlene Lanelle McClendon Cain, passed away on December 11, 2023. Beth, Charlene and Chuck were the children of Charles and Doloris McClendon. Their dad owned Stroud Clay Products, which I always knew as the “brick plant”, with their grandfather Troy Ragland. I wanted to share this information with you because even though they were not Stroud graduates they did attend school here. Also, with their family owning the brick plant, that’s a big part of our Stroud history. Town Talk offers its condolences to my friend, Chuck and his family.
Town Talk would like to congratulate Kristie Smith Hammock, Stroud Class of 1987, on becoming Lincoln County’s newest District Court Clerk. Stroud is always happy to brag on our graduates.
Upcoming community activities include City Council meeting, 5:00 p.m. Thursday November 13th at City Hall, and Stroud Christmas Tree and Neon Sign Lighting, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., November 15th. Vendors and kid’s crafts will take place at Route 66 Pavilion on Main Street, and the lighting will take place at 6:15 p.m. at the Christmas tree in Ed. Smalley Centennial Park.
