Trucks collide, burn on turnpike

Stroud Fire Department responded to a semi crash and fire on Turner Turnpike Friday afternoon, calling in help from the Chandler, Davenport and Kendrick fire departments. There were no injuries.

Stroud Fire Chief Chris Wilson said the call came in about 12:18 p.m., and they were told that two semis had crashed and were on fire near Stroud. One truck was empty, while the other was carrying baked goods. The drivers were able to walk away from the wreck.

“Both of them were able to remove themselves from the wreckage and got to a safe space, and then we ended up responding out there with an engine crew and several tankers, and we ended up having to utilize Chandler for a crew, an engine crew, and Davenport and Kendrick brought tankers as well,” he said.

Wilson said they were fortunate that the wreck happened before the snow hit, though the colder temperatures can make it twice as tough on firefighters.

“We’re pretty fortunate that the roads were still clear when that happened because it would have definitely changed the dynamic of the response for everybody,” he said.

From what he could tell, the fire chief said the two trucks bumped into each other, and it caused a domino effect.

They were able to clear the scene in about two hours.
