Davenport 45s Hillsdale-Kremlin in opener

Davenport scored early and often in the season opener and beat Hillsdale-Kremlin, 54-0, Friday night.

The game ended early under the 45-point mercy rule.

The Bulldogs racked up 288 yards of total offense while holding the visiting Broncs to -24.

“I thought we did a really good job,” said head coach Grant Powell. “We fumbled the opening kickoff and put our defense in a hole, but we bailed ourselves out. After that, we didn’t look back. We just kept on going.

“Everyone got to play and everyone got some valuable reps. After every time we scored, I asked them if they were tired and they ‘no, sir.’ They were wanting some more of it.”

Powell gave special credit to his offensive line: center Tristan Williams, guards Gage Mason and Laken Durbin and tight end Carter Marshall.

“Last year was their first year to start at the varsity level and the growth they made from last year has been incredible,” he said.” The holes they made for our backs were really good. I thought they did a good job.”

Next up is a road trip to Maud, with a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday. The Tigers lost their opener to Depew last week, 58-8.

“I think if we do what we need to, it will be a good outcome,” Powell said.

“There are always things to work on. I think we can get a little better on special teams and take that to the next level.”

Powell also said he appreciated the crowd at the opener Friday.

“The last 20 years, since we’ve been eight-man, Davenport has been really, really good,” he said. “There were a lot of people there Friday night and it was awesome to see that back in Davenport.”
