A couple of years ago, Shelley Dobson of Wellston went to a fund-raiser for Halfway Homes for Greyhounds, a Tulsa charity that finds homes for retired racing dogs.
She bid on and won the rights to rename a pup bearing the unlikely handle of Starsky and to adopt him when his racing career ended.
She renamed him Red’s Rockin Keno and followed his career racing in Florida.
Red’s Rockin Keno’s career came to an abrupt end in March, when COVID-19 closed down his track. Florida had voted to end greyhound racing at the end of the year.
A taut bundle of muscle that makes you think of an arrow in a quiver, Red’s Rockin Keno put himself in the record books by winning his last race, which was the last race on the final night of racing at his track.
A couple of weeks later, Red’s Rockin Keno, pictured with Shelley, was on his way to Wellston and his retirement home.
