Fatal crash near Meeker

A young Shawnee man died early Sunday morning in a one-vehicle traffic accident on Highway 18 south of Meeker.

State Trooper Eric Stacy identified the victim as Landon Elliott, 18, Shawnee. The trooper said Elliott was pronounced dead at the scene by REACT.

Stacy reported the collision occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Highway 18 and Moccasin Trail Road, in Pottawatomie County, but the driver and the vehicle weren’t located until around eight hours later.

The trooper said Elliott was driving a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta west on Moccasin Trail and failed to yield at the stop sign and continued west across all lanes of North Harrison, over the curb, through the ditch, striking multiple trees.

The report states the vehicle rolled an unknown number of times, ejecting Elliott, and coming to rest on its driver side approximately 70 yards from North Harrison. The vehicle and driver were located at approximately 10:19 a.m., the trooper reported. Cause of the collision is listed as unsafe speed.
