T-shirts to diapers

One local couple is taking an article of clothing that may look like it’s used up, and giving it new life.

Chandler residents Steve and Jean Lucas are accepting donations of old t-shirts to be turned into diapers for expecting mothers in Nicaragua.

Steve said he heard about this program called Casa Materna, through the Misión Para Cristo organization, that helps provide diapers for expecting mothers in the remote areas of Nicaragua from his old college roommate and knew he wanted to help.

“The goal is 10,000 t-shirts,” Steve said.

Steve said each shirt will transformed into one diaper. In years past, the organization 1,500 – 2,000 diapers a year, meaning each mother only gets about one or two diapers.
