Even amid the pandemic, we “heard the bells” on Christmas Day at Prairie Pointe.
We enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, sparkling grape juice and eggnog before a grand meal of smoked turkey and ham. Wirt Trawick offered the blessing. We were reminded that this Christmas will be remembered as atime of perseverance and hope. It was a time of challenges met and blessings counted.
There is a somber Christmas carol, “I heard the bells on Christmas Day,” based on a Civil War poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who, in 1863, was mourning the loss his wife and son.
And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth, I said
For hate is strong
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
But the poem continues with this ending:
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor doth he sleep
The Wrong shall fail
The Right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men!
So with those words in mind and the days of 2020 coming to an end, let’s count our blessings and look forward to a Happy New Year! Remember, what if you woke up tomorrow with only those thing you gave thanks for today? I am afraid most of us would be in a world of hurt.
Lincoln County Health Department is here today, giving the COVID vaccine to all residents and staff of Prairie Pointe. This vaccine requires another dose in about a month. We see light at the end of the tunnel, but, please, just for a few more months, we must be vigilant and continue to practice the 3 Ws - Wash your hands, Wear a mask and Watch your distance.
