The education sales tax figures in February show an increase over January but the figures for March are down from February in all of the three area school districts in Pottawatomie County that receive it and for the DA Justice Center, the Pottawatomie County Treasurer’s office reports.
The figures for February are based on retail sales throughout the county during December of 2020. The March figures are for retails sales in the month of January.
The Pottawatomie County education sales tax of .495 percent went into effect July 1, 2016 following approval by county voters in November of 2015.
The December taxes were submitted to the Oklahoma Tax Commission in January and distributed back to the county in February. The January taxes were submitted to the Commission in February and distributed in March.
The Citizen Potawatomi Nation also made its first contribution of the calendar year to the schools and DA Justice Center in March.
The amount of the sales tax directed monthly to each of the schools’ accounts is based on average daily attendance from last year that is submitted to the county treasurer each August. The amounts schools are now receiving are based on the 2019-2020 school year, Magnus said.
