For the last two years,we have asked area high school students to write open letters to veterans. This year, we asked seniors from the Chandler High School band, the Meeker Bulldogs, the Stroud Tigers and the Chandler Lions.

Hung jury in trial of Chandler man

The trial for a Chandler man on alleged crimes against a child has ended in a hung jury and will be retried in early 2024. A woman who was also charged in the case entered a blind plea earlier this year and is currently doing three lengthy prison sentences.

Warrant issued in ear-biting

A bench warrant issued for the arrest of a Norman man facing two charges has been returned and filed and he made his initial appearance on Nov. 2. David Ade, 57, was formally charged in Lincoln County District Court Oct.

Deer Camp opens

Lincoln County On-Stage’s production of Deer Camp will open on Friday. Showtimes and dates are November 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee on November 12 at 2:00 p.m. Cast members include (left to right) Steve Fuhrman, Brett Anderson, David Timmons, and Charlie Nichols.

Kendrick Pig Roast

The Kendrick Fire Department will hold its annual pig roast on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Kendrick Fire Station. It’ll be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is being sponsored by the Davenport Masonic Lodge. The event has continually grown over the years and is set to be bigger this year.

Thank you to veterans

For the second year, we asked area high school seniors to write letters to veterans thanking them for their service. This year, it was the seniors from the Meeker Bulldogs football team, the Pride of Chandler band and the Stroud Tigers football team and the Chandler Lions football team.

7:30 a.m. - Breakfast at United Methodist Church 8:30 a.m. - Parade lineup at American Legion Building 9 a.m. - Parade through Downtown Chandler and to schools 10 a.m. - Chandler High School program at Performing Arts Center 11:30 a.m. - Luncheon and program at American Legion Building 1:30 p.m.

Cemetery traffic - what to do?

Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler is rather quiet and peaceful in the mornings. But around 7:07 a.m., headlights can be seen making their way through the gravestones. From then until just after the first bell at 8:05 a.m., there was a small yet steady stream of cars.
Charlie Hill, shown above in Chandler in October and at right in Vietnam in 1968, was recently included in the Making History Project at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City. A Creek/Seminole Indian who was a sniper in the U.S. Marine Corps, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam, where, he says, his fellow Marines just called him Chief. We asked him to write this account of one of his experiences as a Marine in Vietnam.

VETERANS DAY

I served two tours of duty in Vietnam in 1968-69. In the summer of 1968 during the Tet Offensive, Agent Orange was being used, which affected most of those who were in combat areas. Many have never recovered and are still being treated, including myself.
