Congrats, Graduates!

I struggled coming up with a graduation column. It wasn’t that my own experience was particularly bad. More like it didn’t lend itself to any funny stories that I can share.So, I did the cliche thing. I crowdsourced advice from my friends. And this is the list we came up with.

Happy Birthday, Trey

My baby brother would be 30 today.That is a weird statement to me. First of all, the idea of Trey being 30 is so incredibly foreign. He’ll forever be 20 and gangly inmymind.Ornerywith a charming smile. The kind of guy who weed-eats in Wranglers, boots and no shirt.

Support the arts

I was an arts kid. This is a well established fact at this point.I did theatre. Joined the dance team. Tried out choir. I was even in band for two years in junior high.

The paddle story

All of my siblings and I grew up with a fear of the paddle. Granted, none of us save Trey - really got it that much. I remember as a very young child, just Mom saying, “I’m going to get the paddle” would be enough to strike the fear of God in me, and I wouldn’t step out of line.

Ifyouhaven’tguessed by now -- after a grand total of two columns since becoming editor I feel incredibly blessed that I grew up with the family I did. All of them.

I didn’t grow up on a farm, though we were out in the country. We didn’t have animals outside of our dogs, and at one point, some guinea fowl and chickens (another story altogether). But that didn’t mean we could escape the occasional cattle drive with Papa and MarMar.

The world’s greatest grandparents

I have the world’s greatest grandparents.Yes, I know. I’m sure a lot of people think that. And I’m sure they’re correct. Grandparents, by nature, tend to be pretty cool people. But I am so very grateful that the universe brought me Lee Roy and Linda Kalka.You see, I was born Emily Shook.

Kudos to Mr. and Mrs. Stitt

It was easy to overlook the couple sitting in lawn chairs to watch the high jump competition at the Tiger Classic track meet in Stroud Saturday.
