Wellston FFA wins at State

Wellston FFA performed well during the 100th Oklahoma FFA Convention on May 6, with two members coming home with hardware.

Hayden Green earned third-place honors for the Swine Production PlacementAward, while Kason Proffitt of the Hydro-Eakley FFA Chapter took first and Kilee Blehm of the Mulhall-Orlando FFA Chapter took second. This award recognizes students involved in a supervised agricultural experience using best practices to produce and market swine and their raw products.

Kaden James placed third in the extemporaneous division and fifth in the agricultural policy division of the speech contest in the State FFA Interscholastics contest. The extemporaneous division allows participants to give a four to six-minute speech on a designated agricultural topic. Students select their topic and then have 30 minutes to prepare. The speech is judged on content, presentation and the ability to answer questions. It was sponsored by Dr. Scott Stewart, Doug and Kathy Harryman, Rhett Laubach of YourNextSpeaker.com and Vivayic.

For the agricultural policy divison, participants give a six to eight-minute speech on topics such as domestic farm issues, international trade, rural economic development, politics, animal rights, law, subsidies and price supports. It was sponsored by Dr. L.D. Barker of ProfessionalAnimal Health and Bart and Karalyn Fischer.

The Interscholastics competition is hosted by the Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture.
