NRC falls in program opener

The North Rock Creek Cougars traveled to far eastern Oklahoma for the first football game in program history, falling 22-6 Friday night.

Three years into their new high school, the Cougars are playing an independent schedule this year and have their first three games on the road.

It was an historic trip to Heavener, situated in the Winding Stair Mountains in Rooster Cogburn.

Everything the Cougars did was for the first time in program history, including Rayne Jones scoring the team’s first touchdown.

“Kids are kids. I know they knew it was first game in history,” said coach Jason Murray. “There were some nerves, but they were ready to play.

“We made a lot of mis takes and had some inopportune penalties, but we were in the game.

“We were down 14-0 at half, but came back.”

In addition to the Jones score, North Rock Creek had another touchdown called back because of a penalty. It was set up by a long kick off return from Carter Harvey and a pass to Jones.

“I absolutely loved our fight the whole game.,” Murray said. “We were clawing and scratching.

“We shot ourselves in the foot too many times.”

The Cougars head the opposite direction this week, heading to Crescent, which beat Hennessey 13-7 last week.

“Hopefully, we see the miscues go away,” Murray said. “And hope we continue that trend.”
