The Dale Board of Education this week approved hiring of certified personnel and the athletic department for the 2021-2022 school year.
And Dale Acting School Supt. Ky Wilkins during his report, informed the board the floor in the new high school gymnasium is starting to ripple. He said the floor is raised up several inches.
It’s from the leaks in the gymnasium that occurred during the major winter snowstorm and unprecedented cold temperatures the state suffered in February.
“I will tell you we’re in a pickle,” Wilkins quipped.
He advised girls’ basketball coach Eric Smith brought it to his attention after the school had resumed classes following spring break.
Describing for board members what has to be done to replace the gym floor, Wilkins explained, “That is a month to a month and half process.”
During the snowstorm, the gymnasium and the high school both sustained damage. But school officials and others believed the gym floor had escaped damage.
The acting superintendent said he has called the people who installed the floor and also has been in touch again with the school’s insurance representative.
Wilkins said Monday night he’s still waiting on the insurance company. “Everything is fixed on the other damage,” he told the board.
Wilkins advised the board during an emergency called meeting in February, “The fire suppression line in the new high school office broke. “About 95 percent of the damage is in the high school office,” he advised board members at that time.
Wilkins said the damage in the gym was in the lobby and concession area and the family restroom.
For a few weeks the school was on Fire Watch due to those broken fire suppression lines.
Also during his superintendent’s report, Wilkins provided a detailed financial update comparing the current fiscal year to the previous one.
He presented figures showing through March of this year the district has spent $196,441 less than a year ago in March.
Actual local revenue received is $26,615 more than through March of 2020 and the building fund is $32,225 above what it was a year ago.
The district’s cash balance is $528,152, $189,441 down from a year ago’s $717,593, he said. That’s primarily due to a decline in state aid the district has received.
Through March of this year, the district has received $2,067,789. That compares to $2,355,507 last year.
Stimulus money received by the district totals $430,692 and it must be spent within the next three years, Wilkins explained.
The county educational sales tax fund balance through February is $216,658, the figures show.
