Some heard the quake; some didn’t

Some residents in Pottawatomie and Lincoln Counties heard and felt an earthquake early Monday that reportedly was centered near Sparks while others had no idea one even occurred.

The U.S. Geological Survey shows it recorded a 3.9 magnitude earthquake at 6:12 a.m. Monday centered about 5.5 miles southeast of Sparks.

Meeker’s Town Administrator Dickie Walton said, “I heard a boom, then it rattled things for about two seconds and was over.”

Walton stated he resides in the Payson area of Lincoln County. “It didn’t do any damage,” he added.

Dale School Superintendent Charlie Dickinson resides near North Kickapoo in Pottawatomie County. “I heard it,” he said. “I was awake still lying in bed and there was a loud boom. But I didn’t feel it.”

Paul Simpson resides near Hazel Dell Road in Pottawatomie County, but he didn’t hear it or feel it he said.

Lorrie Walker resides in the Davenport area of Lincoln County.

“It sounded more like a pop than a tremor, “Walker said. “The garage and windows rattled some, but there wasn’t any damage.” she stated.

“I haven’t heard anyone even talk about it,” Walker added.

She works at the Lincoln County Election Board in Chandler and noted that Election Board Secretary Melissa Sambaugh, who resides between Chandler and Davenport she said, didn’t hear it or feel it.

Meeker Fire Chief Robby Ballard said he was up and smoking a turkey at that time Monday but didn’t hear nor feel the quake.

He said he lives along the Lake Road west of Meeker.
