Prague senior Callie Roberts, pictured to the left, received a gold Agricultural Proficiency award rating from the National FFA Association for her work in the area of veterinary sciences.

Roberts said receiving this award felt amazing.

“All my hard work has paid off and it’s very rewarding,” she said.

Prague AG Teacher Lee Stewart said he was very proud of Roberts and all her hard work.

Roberts has been involved in FFA since her freshman year of high school, but began shadowing at Prague Veterinary Clinic when she was 13 years-old.

Veterinarian Tyler Thomas said many students shadow at their clinic, but only for a few weeks.

“She just kept coming,” Thomas said. “For months.”

Thomas has been working with Roberts for over four years said Roberts is a hard worker with good character and the ability to learner quickly.

“She’s one of those few people that learns by watching,” he said. “I can be doing something that she’s never seen before and if I do it twice, by the third time she’s handing me everything I need in the correct order. It’s one of those rare traits that not many people have.”

Roberts said her day consists of cleaning cages, giving medicine, assisting in the exam room, deworming cattle or giving vaccinations.

“She’s not afraid of anything,” Thomas said.

Thomas said she helps wherever she can and isn’t afraid to jump in with a crazy horse or grab ahold of a pig.

“She’s a really good help,” he said. “Wish I had five more like her.”

Thomas said it’s been a pleasure watching her grow and mature and is looking forward to seeing all the great things she will accomplish.

Roberts plans on attending Oklahoma State University and majoring in Agriculture Business, then continuing her education at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

“I thought when she started coming that without a doubt, if she stayed focused, she could make it through vet school and now I know she can,”Thomas said. “Most kids we see, probably the majority of them, can’t. But I know she can.”
