Several local churches partnered with Backpacks of Blessings in Prague on Saturday to provide much-needed clothing and essentials to those in need in the community.

First Christian Church of Chandler hosted the event, said Pastor Lori Smithey, though she called it a true community effort.

The God’s House of Prayer, Cowboy Church and the Friend’s Church also helped, along with volunteers from the Royal Neighbors of America. Individuals also came, bringing “a heart for helping those in need,” she added.

Smithey said they helped approximately 41 people. They fed them and provided backpacks filled with necessities. They also had clothing and other items, such as toiletries, available for people to take. The church is hoping to hold the event quarterly.

“We had so many volunteers and energy behind it, and our church really just has a desire to help those in our community,” Smithey said. “We helped the homeless, but also those families that just need a little extra support.”

While the First Christian Church will host the events, she said they are hoping to have other churches help sponsor. They are planning to call it Neighbors in Need going forward. They will also continue to work with Backpacks of Blessings.

“They did so much work. It was incredible. Their mission statement says their goal is to change lives one backpack at a time,” Smithey said. The group collected all the donations of clothing and brought in about 60 bins worth.

The date for the next event is not set; however, Smithey said anyone interested in helping can contact her at The First Christian Church.
