Wellston schools will not field a football team this fall and instead will play fall and spring base ball.
School Supt. Mike Franz explained the decision actually was made last Spring. He said he, the Athletic Director and the School Board decided to stop football after there was not sufficient support from student athletes to continue the sport.
Franz said after determining there wasn’t enough interest from students to field a football team, that the OSSAA was contacted to find out what the school could do.
“The OSSAA suggested various options. I, the AD and the board decided to go with fall baseball instead. We will also continue fall softball and in addition to spring baseball will play spring softball,” he added.
He said in baseball the school would be in Class A.
He said practice is about to begin for fall baseball, has already begun for fall softball.
He said the seasons for both would start in early August.
