Cleanup

Well, it’s that time again. This weekend, beginning Friday, April 4, and running through Sunday, April 6, Pottawatomie County’s Spring cleanup is being held, District 1 Commissioner Melissa Dennis said.

It runs daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sites include the District 1 yard at 14101 Acme Road in Shawnee; District 2 yard is at 28830 Main Street in Macomb; and the District 3 yard is at 29131 Johnson Road, Maud.

Dennis said all household trash and most everything is allowed except no tires, no refrigerators unless the Freon has been removed and no hazardous materials.

Knowing that for a while, I have started gathering up stuff to put in my pickup truck and haul it away.

I also mentioned it to a friend and neighbor that it was taking place thinking he might want to take advantage of it as well. Sure enough, he said he had some stuff and that he was needing to clean out a large building and wanted to know if it would be all right for him to start putting it in my pickup this past weekend.

So I already have a partial load from what he put in there and will start putting my stuff in there this week as I have time.

I spent quite a bit of time on Sunday continuing to go through and clean out stuff in a closet that I’ve talked about working on for some time now. Not only has that helped me start getting rid of things I don’t need anymore that probably should have been tossed away a long time ago, but also finding some things I do need to hang on to, even some keepsakes like old photos and other stuff I might want or need to pass down.

My wife Pat is always telling me that I hold onto things that no longer serve a purpose, but occasionally I find that isn’t always necessarily right. While much of the time she’s right on track, there are instances where I’ve held onto something that proved useful or I’ve held onto it and later given it away to someone who needed it.

After I finish getting rid of what I don’t need that’s in my closet and in my office area, my plan is to attack the garage.

I’m quite aware tackling that will be a chore, but at least I can get some things tossed away that are not longer needed. A few items may need to go up in the attic. However, not many. We cleaned that out several years ago and have maintained it by not cluttering it up by placing anymore junk in it.
