We had the grandson this past weekend and what a privilege and pleasure it is to have him for a couple of days and nights.

It had been early January since Liam had stayed with us for a weekend. Though he and our daughter and son-in-law don’t live that far away, it seemed the weather hadn’t been that favorable through most of January and February.

When he stays with us he likes to be outside as much as possible, even if it’s a little colder than we think for him. We just bundle him up and we put our heavy jackets and sweat shirts on also.

WhenLiamishereforthe weekend, we usually have certain routines. There’s particular restaurants he enjoys and eating out places that are his favorites, so we accommodate that.

My wife, Pat, drove over to Norman to pick him up Friday afternoon and got back in time to bring him out with her for awhile to the final evening of the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show. I had to cover part of it, primarily the Gordon Richards, Sr. Leadership awards.

That was first on our agenda, so he and Pat attended as I covered it. First time we’ve ever done anything like that while I worked but we had the opportunity to introduce him to a lot of people who knewwehadagrandsonbut had never had the chance to meet him.

He was really good, people commented how well-mannered he was and he clapped each time we did as the recipients for the awards were introduced, then later presented their awards.

We attended the buyers reception as we normally do, but shortly afterwards Pat and I ate she left with Liam so she could get him something to eat since he wasn’t real keen on what was served. But, then again, what do you expect from a 5½-year old.

On Saturday morning I drove to our favorite place for donuts. He always requests certain kinds and includes getting some for his mom and dad so when they came Sunday afternoon first to have dinner with us and later take him back home, they can take some with them to have.

Saturday morning was pretty chilly if you remember. It was in the 30s with the wind chill in the 20s, but that didn’t deter Liam from wanting to go for a ride in the golf cart.

In just the two months since we had seen him, he’d grown enough where he could reach the foot pedal while steering the cart as he sat in front of me and could reach one of the latches on our building that he couldn’t in January.

We took a brief ride, deciding to let it warm up a bit, then got his little car out that he drives in our backyard.Sowespentquite a bit time out before and after we went to eat lunch.

Sunday was quite a bit warmersowespentmostall dayoutside, withhimriding his little car around, we taking golf car rides and all 3 of us going for ride in our old blue pickup truck.

When our daughter MeghanandhusbandTerry came, they brought dinner with them, Terry having smoked a pork butt and Meghan preparing dishes to go with it.

Little guy gave out in the recliner before dinner and slept for nearly two hours before they left later to go home.

What a great weekend it was.
