WLTs go to 16-0

Titles for Dale, McLoud, NRC, Meeker, Wellston

Wellston’s Lady Tigers kept their unbeaten record intact and captured their third straight Davenport Hardwood Classic championship with a 27-21 win over Meeker Saturday night.

The WLTs are 16-0 and ranked No. 10 in Class A, while Meeker goes to 5-7.

The game was the lowest point total of the season for Wellston, who hadn’t scored below 44 in a game all season.

Head coach Chad Hutchison attributed that to a shift in defense by Meeker and his team not adjusting.

“We came out hard and fast with an 8-0 run and they switched from man defense to zone,” he said. “Our looks weren’t very methodical - we didn’t do a very good job recognizing what we needed to do.”

Meeker’s boys won the championship in their side of the tournament, downing Wellston, 55-50. It was a rematch of the finals of the Agra tournament, which Meeker won by a 46-35 count. Meeker is 9-3 for the season and Wellston is 10-5.

The third-place games were matchups of Davenport vs. Strother, with the host Bulldogs winning both.

The Davenport boys beat the Yellowjackets, 59-36, and moved their record to 10-2 for the season. They are ranked No. 19 in the state in Class B-1.

The Davenport girls won their third-place game by a 36-32 margin and moved their record to 9-3.

Dale and McLoud won boys and girls championships at Kingston and Henryetta, respectively.

McLoud’s unbeaten Lady Redskins dominated the Henryetta tournament and handled Okemah, 62-33, in the championship game. McLoud is 11-0 and ranked No. 5 in Class 4A. The McLoud boys had an overtime scare in the semifinals against Metro Christian, but pulled it out and them clipped Okemah in the finals, 52-44.

Dale’s top-ranked boys and girls made their annual trip to Kingston for the New Year’s Classic and both brought home hardware.

The girls moved to 14-1 by beating Broken Bow, 55-5, in the final. The boys won their three games by an average score of 75-40 and dropped Broken Bow in the finals, 61-53.

North Rock Creek’s unbeaten and fourth-ranked boys held on for a 48-46 win over 10th-ranked Ada in a battle of Cougars at the Chickasaw Nation’s East Central Oklahoma Classic. NRC is 9-0 after the win.

NRC’s girls fell to Ada in the first round, but came back to win the consolation championship.

Prague’s girls and Chandler’s boys both hit the finals of the Ripley tournament.

The Lady Devils came from behind to beat Chandler in their semifinals, but fell to Ripley, 46-38 in the championship game.

The sixth-ranked Lions beat Yale, 74-50, in the first round and Ripley, 64-40, in the semifinals to move into the finals, where they faced the fourth-ranked Kellyville Ponies.

Kellyville took home the championship hardware with a 54-49 victory. The Lions are now 9-2 for the season.

Chandler’s girls fell to Crossings Christian, 41-29, in their thirdplace game.
