Veterans Day salute

MIKE McCORMICK This Saturday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day where we have the chance to remember and observe those who have served in the military and those currently in our Armed Forces. The calendar on my cell phone indicates Veterans Day is observed on Friday, Nov. 10.

Letter to the editor

On Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, at the Joe Telford football field in Chandler, as everyone in attendance stood for the playing of our National Anthem, it was with embarrasment and great disheartening to discover NO flag flying on the pole or anywhere on the field.

Bird in the hand

As soon as I answered a call from Kindra last week, my phone turned off and gave me a message that said, paraphrased: “The battery in your iPhone is nearly kaput. Better think about getting a new phone.” Great.

License

The guy at the checkout stand glanced at my driver’s license. “Oh, wow,” he said. “You have a birthday tomorrow.” “No, that was a few weeks ago.” It was then that I noticed he was looking at the expiration date. Dern it. It was Monday night and my license was expiring on Tuesday.

Watching the World Series this year is extra special because former Chandler High School athletic standout Jon Gray is pitching for the Texas Rangers against the Arizona Diamondbacks. While a student at Chandler Jon played baseball, basketball and football. His senior year he focused on baseball.

Ready for quail season

In just little over a week, the 2023-2024 quail hunting season begins statewide. Opening date to hunt the popular bobwhite is Saturday, Nov. 11. The season runs through Feb. 15, 2024. From the reports I’ve seen and heard, the quail numbers are up over a year ago.

Problems with phones

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about my wife’s mom passing away at the age of 97. As she would have told you, “I’ve had a good life.” She was a walking history book of the city of Shawnee.

Stroud’s business district suffered a terrible loss Monday evening when one of its Main Street businesses caught fire. The building did not currently house an operating business but still contained many items from the previous business.

Clan Robbins

As a kid, I used to wonder about a couple of my uncles. They were friendly guys, easy to get along with and good uncles to have, but they loved to fight. According to my dad - their younger brother - they didn’t need to be angry or offended to fight someone.

Judge should resign

Embattled Lincoln County District Judge Traci Soderstrom should do what is right and immediately resign from her position. Last week following an extensive investigation by the Oklahoma Council of Judicial Complaints, the State Supreme Court filed a petition seeking Soderstrom’s removal.
