Area athletes make a statement

Athletes from Lincoln County turned in best-in-the-state efforts in regional track meets Saturday and two softball teams from Pott County breezed through regionals and take No. 1 and No. 2 rankings into this week’s state tournaments. It was a dominating week, overall.

Top Davenport students announced

Officials at Davenport High School announced the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the 2022 graduating class. Both students have attended DHS since kindergarten. Emma Buchanan will be honored as Valedictorian for achieving a 4.0 grade point average.

Murder defendants due back in court

Two men charged with first degree murder in the death of a man in September of 2021 are due back in Lincoln County District Court today. Pre-preliminary hearings are scheduled at 1:30 p.m. for Steven Roberts, 55, and Virgil Earl Nelson, 67.

Even though the primary elections are two months away, it’s encouraging to see the number of candidates who filed for positions in the area at the county and state levels.

We heard the final six Senate bills in our House Appropriations & Budget Committee last week in advance of the April 22 deadline. We also passed bills in the Joint Committee on Appropriations & Budget. Now these bills are eligible to be heard on the House Floor.

Slow pitch district tournaments played out last week, with Chandler, Prague, Stroud, North Rock Creek and Dale earning berths in this week’s regional tournaments. North Rock Creek will host a regional and will play Checotah at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Sulphur and Newcastle are also in that regional.

Sharon Raye Harwell, of Meeker, Okla., died Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at home, surrounded by family. Sharon was born on August 2, 1947 in Prague, Okla. She was the daughter of Raymond Wright and Elfrieda (Fipps) Case. In December 1965, Sharon married Richard Lee Harwell.
