Davenport’s Bulldogs earned their third shutout of the year by running over Foyil 48-0 in their district opener and homecoming last Friday night.
They ran their record to a perfect 6-0. They are 1-0 in district play.
In pre-game ceremonies, senior Emma Buchanan was crowned the 2021 Davenport football homecoming queen.
This week, the Bulldogs entertain Depew in a Thursday night contest. Davenport Coach John Greenfield said kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
Greenfield said Depew is winless on the season with a 0-6 record.
The veteran head coach said, “Depew is young and big. They lack experience,” he added.
Davenport scored early and often against Foyil. “The game was over at halftime,” he said, pointing to the 48-0 lead the Bulldogs had before intermission.
When a team is leading by 45 or more points, the game is over, he has explained.
“They had a hard time with us. Our reserves scored the final TD,” the coach noted.
“They couldn’t stop us on the ground or in the air,” Greenfield said.
The Bulldogs had three running backs leading a relentless ground attack who each ran for more than 50 yards.
Brock Fowler carried the ball six times and rushed for 53 yards with Parker Mitchell packing the pigskin for five carries and 52 yards rushing.
Griffen Melson rushed for 51 yards in just two carries. on the ground and Melson had three touchdowns, one rushing the ball, another catching a pass and the third on a punt return.
Sophomore quarterback Chance Accord was 4 of 9 passing for 46 yards and he carried the ball four
Colten VanFossen rushed for 32 yards in his one carry for a touchdown.
Casey Harelson had a fumble recovery that he scampered 27 yards to pay dirt. He also caught a pass for 11 yards and forced a fumble.
