Meeker Board of Education members recently hired four new personnel for the 2024-2025 school year and voted to approve two forms for nutrition that will allow all students attending Meeker schools this year to have free breakfasts and lunches.
Without going into executive session, the board members voted to hire Jessica Gore, Elementary School paraprofessional, Graham Gooch, High School teacher/ coach, Michael Adkins, High School custodian and Amy Shelby, Elementary teacher.
Following a lengthy discussion, the board members voted 4-1 to approve the High School, Middle School and Elementary School handbooks for the 2024-2025 school year.
The discussion centered around excused and unexcused absences and the dress code, primarily for the Middle School and High School students.
Voting in favor of approving the handbooks were Lindel Standlee, Bret Woods, Josh Elliott and Jason Hessman. Abstaining was Stacie Miller.
In their reports, High School Principal Brad Buxton told the board members there have been 10 transfers from North Rock School in the last week or so, noting, “We haven’t hit August yet. We’re g o ing to be quite a bit higher this year in enrollment,” he predicted.
The high school enrollment for 2024-2025 currently stands at 232.
Matt Jones, Middle School principal, pointed to the golf tournament/fund raiser coming up July 29. H e also advised board members, “The enrollment numbers are going to be up. We’re already up 16 to 188 from where we ended last year and I have a stack of new enrollments to go through.”
Elementary Principal Sarah Flowers informed board members that enrollment is set for from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 29 through Aug. 1. She also thinks elementary enrollment may be higher than a year ago.
Flowers said, “The tile and carpet and painting looks fantastic,” referring to work being done over t h e summer at the Elementary school. “The school looks brighter and even smells better.”
She invited board members to come by the school and visit any day.
