August

This time of year is one of my favorites. The month of August is normally hot and, though this might sound a little strange, I like it that way as September nears.So far, August has lived up to its normal billing. We’ve experienced a few days of 100 degree weather or at least near the century mark.

Ice cream

I got to thinking last week, when it was 156 degrees by midafternoon, that it was high time the Blansetts made a batch of ice cream.And so we did. There are few things as good as a bowl of ice cream scooped from the freezer on a hot August day.

Changes in regulations

Hunting and fishing has changed so much since I was a kid. Of course that’s been considerably over 50 years.That can probably be attributed to all the various rules and regulations put in place by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation over a period of time.

Drug charges against pair

A man and a woman from Carney are each facing multiple drug counts and each has been previously been convicted of felonies.Formal charges were filed in Lincoln County District Court July 22, 2025 against Clyde Edgar Gladden III, 24, and Rita Ann Mendenhall, 45.

King snake

The other day, Kindra texted me a photo of a snake on our front porch.It was longish, black with a yellowish pattern and looked like it was due for a meal.The implied question in the text was: “What kind of snake is this?

We deserve better than Walters

School Supt. Ryan Walters is at the forefront once again and Oklahoma lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are demanding an investigation into an incident which reportedly occurred at a closed meeting recently of the State Board of Education.

Memories coming in the mail

A week or so ago I received in the mail from a first cousin in the Grapevine, Texas area the sweetest card that also had tucked inside an envelope full of old photos.It included a note letting me know what the photos were and that she had taken the time to gather them up.

Letter to the editor

I was called at 1:20pm Friday by a man posing as an attorney for my son, who had been arrested Tuesday.He said a judge referred him to my son’s case because he was innocent of the charge and needed to be a federal witness and out on an ankle monitor until he appears as a witness to a federal crime.

Lifetime Stroud area resident Frances Hixon passed away on July 19th. Frances graduated from Stroud High School with the Class of 1958. She married her husband, the late Charles Hixon, in 1959. They had one daughter, Martha.
